COPIAH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

State Troopers believe a race between a motorcycle and an SUV on Highway 51 near the Hinds - Copiah County line Sunday night was the cause of a deadly crash.

According to Cpl. Odis Easterling with the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, at 7:56 p.m. Sunday evening, a two vehicle fatal accident occurred on Hwy 51.

Easterling adds a motorcycle, driven by John A. Cherrington, 28, of Bloomsberg, Pennsylvania, was traveling southbound in the right lane. The second vehicle involved, a 1997 white Ford Explorer was driven by Jeremiah C. Parrish, 33, of Crystal Springs, traveled southbound in the northbound lane.

Witnesses reported that the two vehicles appeared to be racing. The Explorer passed the motorcycle and attempted to make a right turn. The motorcycle collided with the right rear of the Explorer. Cherrington was pronounced dead on scene as a result of his injuries.

Parrish is being charged with DUI manslaughter, driving while license suspended, and no proof of liability insurance. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
