Convicted murderer gets 15 years for chase

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A 29-year-old convicted murderer is headed back to prison after pleading guilty to stealing a vehicle and leading police on a chase while out on probation.

Larry Demon Smith, also known as "Red", was sentenced to 15 years with three years suspended after pleading guilty to felony evasion and possession of stolen property.

Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest says Smith was arrested in Flowood in April after he stole a vehicle, led police on a high-speed chase and hit another vehicle. Smith then fled the crash scene on foot and was apprehended near the Jackson airport. The driver of the other vehicle wasn't injured.

Guest says Smith was convicted of murder in Hinds County in 2004 and sentenced to 15 years in prison. It's unclear why he was out on probation. The Hinds County District Attorney's Office didn't immediately return a call Monday afternoon.
