JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An 82-year-old woman, who asked not to be identified, asked for help with, not one, but several blighted properties on two avenues in her neighborhood. She advised one ride along South Rosemary Avenue and Norwood Avenue would show how badly her "once lovely" community needs help.

With a short drive starting on Rosemary Avenue off of Cooper Road, it didn't take long to see what the resident was talking about.

One house appears to have burned before and the yard clearly has not been maintained. There was more of the same as we rounded the corner and Rosemary became Norwood Avenue. Signs of a once proud neighborhood, now, slowly giving way to neglect and abuse.

The 82-year-old woman stated she knows many of the people who live here and most are her age. She said most have lived here for 50 years or more, paid their taxes and kept up their houses and lots.

But she adds, as they die off or move out, the "bad element" moves in. She would neither go on camera or allow her identity to be revealed for fear of her safety. She said owners are not taking care of their responsibility and she doesn't think the city of Jackson is doing its part.

However, we saw several code enforcement notices posted on one house, evidence that help may be on the way. The City of Jackson has been asked for a status update on South Rosemary Avenue and Norwood Avenue. WLBT will report information from city officials.
