Deadly, resistant bacteria showing up in care facilities

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Public health officials are warning of a dangerous and often deadly bacteria that's making the rounds in many hospitals across the country.

The bacteria are called C-R-E and are increasingly resistant to the most powerful antibiotics available.

It's so difficult to treat, that the director of the U-S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention referred to it as "nightmare bacteria."

Up to half of patients who get bloodstream infections from C-R-E die.

Although the bacteria are not widespread in U-S hospitals, cases of at least one type of C-R-E increased seven-fold over the past decade. It's most common in northeastern states.
