Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr., announced plans Wednesday to repave more than two dozen streets in the city this year, and said funding is needed to resurface larger portions of the city's 1,200 miles of street.
"Until we have a dedicated source, until we have a large influx or injection of dollars into our street paving program, we're gonna have to pave about a million dollars worth of streets a year and that's gonna be four or five miles of street," Johnson said.
Twenty seven residential streets and 25 intersections will be resurfaced at a cost of $1.1 million dollars.
Some residents say they don't think the city is doing enough.
"I think 27 streets is just completely not enough. Like I said, I just recently moved back, and I'm just appalled at the condition of the streets in Jackson now. It's horrible," Jackson resident Glenis Wansley said.
The mayor also said the city is still looking for ways to pay for $900 million in water and sewer improvements over the next 20 years after the local option sales tax failed and council members rejected a $10 million bond issue.
