(WMC-TV) – An embattled Mid-South mayor has not one, but two wives.
The Oakland Board of Aldermen Wednesday night accepted Scott Ferguson's resignation as mayor and swore in the vice mayor. Documents uncovered by Action News 5 show Ferguson appears to have two wives.
"I don't know him personally, but he was a Church of Christ preacher when he was elected mayor," said Oakland resident Gary Busby. "Very disappointed."
The latest bombshell in the saga of the mayor of Oakland, Scott Ferguson: he appears to have two wives.
Ferguson said by phone on Monday he handed in his letter of resignation as mayor.
"I decided to resign because I have not been true to my wife and I have neglected my family," he said.
Ferguson appears to be talking about his first wife, the mother of his four children, Laurie.
A marriage certificate and court documents filed by his second wife, Miguelina Mora who lives in Cordova, show Ferguson married Mora a few weeks ago on Valentine's Day in West Memphis.
Mora is asking for a divorce or annulment because Ferguson entered into the marriage fraudulently because he is still married to his first wife Laurie.
Fayette County District Attorney Mike Dunavant said he received the complaint, and he did a cursory check to determine if Ferguson ever got a divorce from his first wife. Dunavant said it does not appear he ever got a divorce.
On Monday, Ferguson said he was concerned about a photo of him making the rounds in Oakland. He said he didn't know who took it.
He also said he was trying to get back with his wife.
With this new information about his two wives, it is not clear who Scott Ferguson wants to reconcile with.
DA Mike Dunavant said Crittenden County has jurisdiction over the second marriage since it happened there. Repeated calls to Scott Ferguson were not returned. No one answered the door at Miguelina Mora's Cordova home. Mora is asking for alimony from Ferguson.
