Poll could lead Greg Davis to go independent

(WMC-TV) - Greg Davis, Southaven Mayor, has until 5 p.m. Friday to decide if he will run for re-election. And he tells us if he does run, it will be as an Independent and not a republican - all because of a poll he says was disturbing.

"It was very disheartening to me to find out that 35 percent of the Republican voters wouldn't vote for me because of my sexuality or sexual preference," Davis said. "To me that was very disheartening."

Davis and his supporters are now trying to get 50 signatures of registered voters needed so that he can file.  In January, he announced he would not seek re-election for a fifth term, but says he does not like the direction the current board of Aldermen has taken.

Under Davis, Southaven has become the third largest city in Mississippi. Ronnie Hale, Alderman, credits Davis for the good he's done, but says re-election may not be wise considering his current legal problems.

"I think he is aware that a lot of the turmoil with the city is directly related to the Mayor's office. I just don't think it's a good choice for him to make," said Hale.

The six candidates who have already filed for mayor are all Republicans.  If Davis does run, he'll face the winner of that race in June.
