NATCHEZ, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Natchez man has been indicted for a 2011 murder that possibly stemmed from a feud between a family member and the victim.

Lee Smith, 19, was indicted Tuesday on charges of murder in the shooting death of Walter Washington. According to Investigator Jerry Ford with the Natchez Police Department, Smith confronted Washington in the Natchez Mall parking lot on the afternoon of Aug. 27, 2011.

After an exchange of words, Smith pulled out a handgun and opened fire on Washington, fatally shooting him in the chest. Investigator Ford says an accomplice helped Smith flee the state shortly after the shooting, and Smith was discovered by officials in Michigan in November.

Smith was extradited to Mississippi in November and indicted on the murder charge Tuesday. Smith's bond was set at $300,000, but he remains behind bars at this time.

Investigator Ford adds that Washington was 25-years-old when he was killed and police believe the shooting stemmed from an on-going feud between Washington and Smith's brother.

Smith is currently awaiting trial.
