Volunteers take to the water during reservoir cleanup

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Volunteers spruced up the reservoir this weekend during the Great American Cleanup.

Keep the Rez Beautiful sponsored the effort to pick up trash and debris on land and in the water.

Churches, Boy Scouts, businesses, homeowners and other groups took part.

Kayakers and people in canoes also picked up trash floating in the reservoir.

The cleanup was followed by a cookout for the workers.

"This is the first time that there's been a cleanup on Pelahatchie Bay. I've lived out here 14 years and I'm ecstatic today, because we've got great kayakers and canoers cleaning up this reservoir. You wouldn't believe the trash that floats up in here," said Jeannine May with Keep the Rez Beautiful.

"We have a barge out here on the water so we can take the trash from the kayakers and put it on the barge. There's a little competition on the water too for the largest piece of trash and the most unusual piece of trash that they can pick up," said Volunteer Jeff Roberts who works at Duncan Marine.

Trees were also planted at a four acre vacant lot which is soon to be a park on Scenic Drive between the Forest Point and Turtle Creek subdivisions.
