Police say a Lebanon man admitted to drinking more than six alcoholic beverages before plowing his car into two pedestrians and a truck last week.
It turns out this is not the first time Donald Crabtree, 29, has been caught drinking and driving.
Gregory Weyker Jr., 36, of Murfreesboro, known to his friends as Mike, is a nurse and has been caring for patients for five years.
"I'm immobile right now," Weyker said.
But he was the one in need of help Friday afternoon.
"I was going into shock," Weyker said. "It's nothing like I've ever experienced before, getting hit at 50 mph. It was crazy."
Weyker and his friend, Stewart Morrical, of Murfreesboro, were looking to test drive a used Ford F-150, which was parked at Discount Battery on 1727 NW Broad St. That's when police say Crabtree fell asleep at the wheel and his car careened right toward the men.
Weyker was standing on the passenger side of the truck and said he didn't see the car coming at him.
"I was impacted. It threw me about 35 feet, and I rolled into a utility pole," Weyker said.
Morrical had just stepped out the driver's seat and narrowly escaped injury.
"I had just turned to my left, and I saw a car coming barreling down the side of the road," Morrical said. "I ran into the traffic, just in the nick of time, before he impacted the truck."
A Discount Battery worker had just opened the hood of the truck so the men could see the engine when Crabtree's car hit the side of the truck, spinning it around 180 degrees. His car came within six inches of hitting the worker. The side view mirror hit him in the stomach, and his left foot was run over by a wheel.
Police said Crabtree reeked of alcohol. They said he refused to perform a field sobriety test and allegedly told officers, "Go ahead and arrest me."
They did just that.
"He had two prior DUIs and had a revoked driver's license," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans. "So this is the probably the last person in the world that should have been driving Friday afternoon."
Now, Weyker is badly banged up. He said he has pain all over his body, road rash, six stitches in his mouth and a fractured tibia. His chest hurts so badly, he said, he can barely breathe.
"I thought I was going to die," Weyker said.
At first, medical responders thought he might, too.
"The EMT people couldn't believe he was alive, and I actually couldn't believe he was alive either," Morrical said. "I thought he was dead as I walked up to him."
Weyker survived, but he knows it will take quite some time to heal.
"I don't know how people like that who drink and drive can get back behind the wheel," Weyker said. "I just don't understand."
Crabtree was charged with his third DUI, driving on a revoked license and driving with an open container for allegedly having a flask containing alcohol.
He also faces drug charges for having what police believe were four vials of anabolic steroids and needles in his car.
Officers said Crabtree admitted to consuming six alcoholic beverages before the crash, and he also allegedly admitted to using steroids a few months prior.
He's scheduled to appear in court to answer to the charges in June.
