Severe thunderstorms moving through northeast Mississippi Monday afternoon brought high winds that proved treacherous for big rig drivers. At least three accidents were reported on Highway 45 in Lee County within minutes of the storm hitting the county.
The one that had most people talking was an accident on Highway 45 at the Barnes Crossing Road interchange.
The driver of the truck, Joe Sisk of Shannon, Mississippi, was returning from a haul to Tennessee. He says the wind literally picked up the trailer and set it over the side of the bridge. The cab remained connected and remained on the bridge.
Sisk says he kept thinking the whole thing would go over with him in it.
"The wind just gently picked me up and made me go across the top of the bridge banister," said Sisk. "And it just laid over on its side, just as pretty as you'd please, as gentle as possible."
In a matter of seconds, it was over. Sisk not only lived to tell about the accident; he wasn't injured at all, except maybe a bit shaken up.
Winds in excess of 60 miles per hour were reported across north Mississippi with the highest recorded gust being 77 mph at Columbus Air Force Base in Lowndes County.
