STONE COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -
Police and officials from rescue and veterinary organizations served a notice to a home in Stone County on Tuesday where they believed to be around 60 neglected and abused dogs.
As rescuers worked throughout the day it became apparent that number would be far exceeded. As of 5 p.m. 90 dogs had been pulled from the home with about another 35 still in the home.
Officers with the Stone County Sheriff's served the notice at the front door of a home along Terry Cuevas Road in the Red Creek Area around 10:30 a.m. The owner was not home.
Once inside, they discovered about the dogs living in substandard conditions. Rescue workers with the Humane Society of the United States,the Southern Pines Animal Shelter, the Stone County SPCA and several volunteers entered wearing masks to protect from the smell.
On arrival, officials discovered garbage bags containing dead dogs on the front porch of the home. During the rescue, several dogs were discovered dead and another had to be euthanized.
The dogs will be treated, crated, and sent to various shelters in the Pine Belt. Officials said about 20 will be sent to the Southern Pines Animal Shelter.
The owner, Shirley Guy, will be charged with animal cruelty and neglect.
Officials said Guy moved to this location from a home in Lumberton where she was hoarding dogs after complaints from the community there.
