USM prepares for "scary" team in NIT opener

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Whatever disappointment the Golden Eagles felt Sunday night after being left out of the NCAA tournament, they better be over it come Wednesday night according to Donnie Tyndall. The head men's basketball coach for the University of Southern Mississippi described his team's first opponent for the National Invitational with one word- "scary."

"They're a four-guard team. So they're going to space the floor," said the first-year head coach of the Golden Eagles, who's team likes to play a matchup zone defense, "They average over nine made threes per contest, and against our zone, that's a scary that a team that can spread the floor like they will and shoot it as well as they do."

Charleston Southern University of the Big South Conference finished 19-12 and were upset in the conference tournament final by Liberty University, but they know how to put the ball in the hoop. The Buccaneers rank 37 in the country in points per game, averaging around 74 points a night.

Southern Miss is only seven spots ahead Charleston Southern in that category. Should the Eagles win round one, they'll return home to face Louisiana Tech, who downed Florida State 71-66 on Tuesday night.
