JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The 2013 County Health Rankings, which rank the overall health of nearly every county in all 50 states, have been released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The rankings allow counties to see how they compare to other counties in the state.

The healthiest county in Mississippi is DeSoto followed by Lamar, Lafayette, Rankin and Madison counties.

Quitman is the least healthy with Coahoma, Wilkinson, Holmes and Claiborne counties rounding out the bottom five.

Overall, 22 percent of Mississippians are in fair or poor health, 36 percent are obese, 33 percent are inactive and 24 percent smoke.  Experts say these issues must be addressed at the county level because they vary from community to community.

The counties where people don't live as long and don't feel as well have the highest rates of smoking, teen births and lack of exercise, according to the report.
