Insurance adjusters say the average claim is running between $3,000 and $5,000.

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The Live Oaks subdivision in Rankin County looks like a warzone in the wake of Monday's hailstorm. Windows are shattered on cars and homes, but the real damage may be hidden under shingles right above residents' heads.
"What you're going to see with this type of hail...it's broke the decking on your home that's why you're having the leaks. Normally it would just kind of bruise the shingle; you normally don't have this kind of leak after a hail storm but this is something very unique," said Clliff Smith, owner of No Drip Roofing.
Roofing experts say people may not know how bad the damage is until the next good rain. No Drip Roofing workers were placing a tarp on a home where the resident found a leak inside, days after the storm passed.
"Before you call your adjuster, call a roofing company because you don't want to make a claim on your insurance unless you need it," said No Drip employee Johnny Newman.
"I would say as far as roofing goes, it's right along the lines of Katrina [with] the volume of damage that's been done in our communities," says Smith.
Experts say it's also a good idea to research any company you hire to work on your home. Some scam artists can canvas an area in the wake of a storm, and cause even more damage by ripping people off.
"People don't know who they're hiring. They need to hire local companies period. If they're not from here, best thing to do is leave them alone," says Johnny Newman.
The Better Business Bureau of Mississippi has a list of roofing companies' ratings in the Metro area available on its website.
Insurance companies have set up claims centers at several locations, including the Mississippi State Fairgrounds, to handle the hundreds of policy holders who suffered damage in the hail storm.
The Presidential Hills neighborhood was also hit hard in Monday's storm. Blue and black plastic tarps now cover many homes where baseball sized hail and larger pierced through shingles and plywood decking.
"We have leaks in every room. The ceiling has brown spots on it. We have leaks from the ceiling fans, from the light fixtures," says Larry Noyse.
Noyse was waiting on an insurance adjuster to inspect his sister's home as he covered her roof with a large tarp, in anticipation of storms containing hail over the weekend.
"Hopefully we will keep the rain out from the next round of storms," Noyse says.
The State Department of Finance Administration says they had 17 buildings damaged in the storm, including the State Capitol. Early estimates tally the damage at $5 million.
A pile of dimpled metal and broken glass is what's left of Monica Lee's Honda Civic. She was parked at work at the State Hospital in Rankin County when softball sized hail stones started dropping like bombs.
"Glass is on everything. Things I had in the car, in the trunk, school books, computers and things like that got rained on. The car got saturated with water by the windows being broken out. It's sad; the trunk looks like someone assaulted it," says Lee.
Lee was among the steady flow of policy holders at State Farm Insurance mobile claims center at the Home Depot in Brandon Wednesday. Dozens showed up needing repairs from the hail storm.
Geico, Allstate and Nationwide insurance have set up a catastrophe center at the Service King Collision Repair Center on South State Street. Multiple adjusters are inspecting up to six cars an hour.
Tim Wilkerson, a Regional Manager for Service King says, "It's really good for the customer because they can make a decision on when they want to schedule repairs. If they want to drop right now, they can. It's a convenience factor for the customer."
Insurance adjusters say the average claim is running between $3,000 and $5,000. Dent repair experts who fix hail damaged cars across the nation say we weathered a significant storm.
Hail storm victims should file a claim with their insurance company, before visiting a mobile adjustment site.
