JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The dreary sky over Jackson was brightened Saturday morning with something like a rainbow of powder falling from the sky and onto the thousands of participants in the "Color Me Rad 5K."

More than 8,000 people started off fairly spotless, but that quickly changed as people were powdered with color packets and sprayed with dyed water.

"It's been great everybody is just having a wonderful time, it's just a fun party," said runner Donna Burris.

"It's totally safe, there's about 6 to 8 different colors," said Jared Brown, one of the Color Me Rad organizers.

The colorful workout wasn't just for fun. Proceeds will benefit the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital.

WLBT met up with a group of women supporting a Batson patient named Kambree, who also participated in the race.

"It's a fun experience and it gets her out to do fun activities instead of always coming to the doctor," said Kambree's mom, Gina Burton.

It's a cause many say is worth getting powdered with color for.

It's "awesome, awesome I'd do it over and over again," said participant Jaime Windham.

The color packets used are FDA approved colored cornstarch.

"Color Me Rad 5K's" will be held throughout the year in more than 30 cities and Canada.
