Yazoo Co. escapee found dead in apparent suicide

YAZOO COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An inmate, who was captured Monday after escaping the Yazoo County Community Work Center, was found dead in his cell Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Bryan Owens, 27, hanged himself with a sheet at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County.

Officers found him while serving dinner. He was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m.

Owens escaped in Yazoo City Sunday afternoon and was discovered in a parked vehicle in a Pine Bluff, AK, Walmart parking lot just after midnight Monday.

Owens and a female accomplice were apprehended by the Pine Bluff Police Department with the assistance of MDOC Corrections Investigation Division investigators.

Owens was serving a 12-year sentence for convictions of burglary, vehicle theft and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon from Harrison County.

Owens was facing an additional five-year sentence if convicted of escape.
