Two women arrested for luggage thefts at MEM

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Luggage thefts at the Memphis International Airport proved inconvenient for several travelers.  Two women are now accused of the crimes.

If you fly, chances are it has happened to you. Luggage gets lost. It is the risk fliers take when checking a bag. Most of the time, the airlines are able to locate the bag and return it.

But what if someone steals it?

That is what Melinda Arger and Ashley Burnett are accused of doing.

The first victim arrived from Atlanta and was not able to find his bag. At least four more people had the same problem.

Surveillance video shows the women driving their truck up to the baggage entrance, grabbing the bags off of the belt, and driving away.

While there is security in the baggage claim area, it is nearly impossible to tell if someone is taking a bag that does not belong to them until one is reported missing.

After viewing the surveillance video, law enforcement was able to track the two women down at a Memphis hotel. Additional surveillance video showed them lugging the luggage up the stairs.

Arger and Burnett are charged with theft of property.
