Kids' meals still unhealthy

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A new analysis of kids meal options from more than thirty of the most popular restaurant chains finds a majority fail to meet healthy nutrition standards.

Researchers at the Center for Science in the Public Interest say even though restaurants have added fruits, vegetables and low-fat drinks to kids' meals, many are stuck on serving chicken nuggets, hamburgers and mac-n-cheese.

A majority of kids' meals were found to be high in calories, sodium and fat.

The kids grilled cheese and fries meal at Applebee's topped 1,000 calories, and the cheeseburger and fries meal at Denny's was 980 calories.

A majority of fast food chain meals did not meet kids live well standards set by the national restaurant industry.

One restaurant did pass the test: Subway. All of their kids-size sandwiches came with apple slices and water, apple juice or one percent milk.
