JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
It will be at least a week before there's any relief with the traffic problems on Interstate 20 westbound between Jackson and Clinton. Yazoo clay caused a slide undermining the roadway where I-20 crosses over McRaven Road.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation has awarded an emergency contract to provide a temporary fix on this vital east-west link.
Central District Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall says Yazoo clay caused a slide undermining the roadway where I-20 crosses over McRaven Road.
"This has cost us about two and a half million dollars in temporary expenditure, that we were hoping we wouldn't have to spend," said Hall. "But we have to spend it. The highway was literally falling down the hill. And if we don't get the resources, we are going to have continuing problems out there. That highway out there is between 50 and 60 years old. It's got to be maintained. We know what it takes, we just don't have the money to do it."
For now, the best way to travel between Jackson and Clinton will be the use of Highway 80. It will take years for a permanent solution to this problem.
"We have got a short fuse on the contract out there," added Hall. "He is going to fix it in ten days, and if he doesn't, it's going to cost him $50,000 a day, for every day in excess of that."
The permanent solution is the widening and rebuilding of I-20, which is scheduled to begin in 2014.
