HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Pearlington community in Hancock County will soon become a green space. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency plans to buy out most of the remaining homeowners in the storm-ravaged area.

MEMA Director Robert Latham says homeowners are ready to go. Their homes were pummeled by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and other storms that have hit since. Most of the remaining structures are on stilts.

Latham says flood insurance for areas that frequently flood is about to rise sharply, and rebuilding over and over again is expensive too.

"We're working with them, we've allocated funds to the county for a pretty significant buyout there, and it's now become a priority for those citizens and the county to try to do this," said Latham tells us.

Latham says the homes will be appraised to determine the amount each homeowner will receive. There may be a few homes that will remain.

It's unclear when the buyouts will take place.
