BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Pearl man has been fined more than $18,000 after being found guilty of eight counts of animal cruelty and eight counts of city ordinance violations.

John Whitley, 73, was arrested in April after several malnourished horses were seized from his property in Brandon.

April 4, Brandon police and Rankin County deputies seized eight horses from the pasture off Highway 471 near Grants Ferry Road with a judge's order. A veterinarian inspected the horses and determined four -- two mature horses and two foals -- were considered malnourished.

Judge Mike Younger has also ordered that any remaining horses on the property be removed from Whitley's care. He was told he will never place another animal on this property again.

If Whitely doesn't pay his fine in 30 days, he could land in jail.

This is a case that has outraged animal advocates and horse lovers. A concerned citizen contacted the Brandon Police Department about horses.
