NATCHEZ, MS (AP) - The Adams County Board of Supervisors voted to provide the sheriff's office with the funds for a new position.
The Natchez Democrat reports the money will be used to hire a booking officer at $12 an hour for the county jail.
Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said the request for the new officer is one that he made when the county was first making its budget several months ago.
With the hiring of a booking officer, the sheriff told the supervisors on Monday jailers would spend more time on the prison floor interacting with detainees and visitors. He said the booking officer would also be tasked with full-time scanning of paper records into an electronic system, and would pick up other duties as needed.
