JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi now has a chapter of Prevent Child Abuse in America. The announcement was made at the capitol Tuesday on the second day of Child Abuse Prevention Month. The New chapter is in conjunction with the Children's Justice Center at UMMC.

The president and CEO of the national organization, Jim Hmurovich, says child abuse and neglect can have a long lasting impact. Policy must be inclusive on all levels.

Advocates say this is a significant issue in Mississippi that has to be addressed on multiple levels to make a difference in a child's life.

Statistics from the CWLA in Washington DC show that in 2010 17 children in Mississippi died as a result of abuse or neglect. Thousands of others were neglected, physical abused or sexually abused.

Also at the news conference Dr. James Keeton, Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and select lawmakers instrumental in passing tougher legislation against child neglect and abuse were honored for their work.
