The Diamondhead woman accused of killing her husband with a pot of boiling hot oil in 2006 is admitting guilt. Monday, Edna Mae Sanders, 51, pled guilty to "heat of passion manslaughter."
A Hancock County jury convicted Sanders of murder in 2008. But then in 2011 and 2012, the Mississippi Court of Appeals and the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that the trial court erred in not allowing certain evidence to be presented and that certain jury instructions were refused. A new trial was ordered.
As part of her guilty plea, Sanders told the court she threw the hot oil on her husband, Sherman Sanders, after the two had been fighting. She said during the fight, Sherman went into their bedroom, she grabbed the pot of hot oil from the kitchen and followed him into the bedroom. That's where she threw the hot oil on him.
Edna Mae Sanders's daughter testified at the plea hearing asking the court for mercy on her mother. She claimed the fight was because her mother had witnessed Sherman Sanders assault the daughter.
"Taking into consideration the rulings by the appellate courts regarding the admissibility of various testimony, this was the appropriate adjudication of the case," said District Attorney Joel Smith. "The defendant's guilty plea ensures a conviction and eliminates the continuation of any additional, lengthy appeal of the case on its merits."
"After consultation with the victim's family, we felt this was the best way to finally bring some closure and justice in the death of Sherman Sanders," said ADA Matthew Burrell.
Sanders will be sentenced April 15th at the Hancock County Courthouse.
