Vehicle manufacturers in the United States reported sales figures today for this March compared with March a year ago. Both Ford and General Motors were up 6 per cent, while Chrysler was up 5 per cent. The sales numbers are the best in six years.
Locally, at Herrin-Gear Chevrolet, Sales Manager Reed Howell says sales are up 30 per cent-March to March. Herrin-Gear owner Jack Herrin says the increase in sales is mostly attributable to hail damage.
"For Chevrolet, we have got them going out the doors," said Herrin. "Selling a lot of vehicles, as is. Selling a lot of them as is, particularly your trucks."
Herrin estimates hail damage at his Chevrolet dealership at $8 million, and says you can save many thousands of dollars on hail damaged trucks.
At Watson Quality Ford, sales are definitely up more than the national average.
"I think the market is starting to loosen up, I think that people are getting a little bit of confidence," said Sales Manager Cliff Mitchell. "I also think there is a pent up demand, and a need for vehicles."
Nationally, the largest increase reported came from the ram truck, made by Chrysler, which was up 55 per cent March to March.
"You are looking at a truck," said local dealer Joe Usury. "You can look at the Ford, the Chevrolet, you can look at the GMC. You look at this truck and you drive it, you are gonna buy it."
Usury says if he could get more Ram trucks his numbers would be up even more.
He says they aren't making them fast enough.
