VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A murdered teen's mother and grandmother are still trying to come to terms with his death.

"Kemarvin the type person, he was a sweet child. He'd come and sit down and just talk to me, and I would talk to him," says Mattie Gary, his grandmother.

"He was a joker. He was gonna make you laugh," says his mother, Frannie Gary.

On March 16, 17-year-old Kemarvin Stamps and his 16-year-old brother were walking along Gibson Road in Vicksburg when a pickup truck drove by slowly.

"He said when they opened the back glass, one of them yelled out 'whoop, whoop,' and they just started shooting," Frannie Gary said. "They both turn to run. He ran. When he looked back Kemarvin was falling to the ground."

Kemarvin was shot in the head and killed. Frannie Gary believes the boys were acquaintances, nothing else.

Six people have been charged in the murder. They are:

  • Demario Mixon, 19
  • Christopher Jones, 19
  • Melvin Wiggins, 18
  • Devontae Montgomery, 19
  • Marquis Black, 15
  • Romaire Brown, 16

Wiggins has posted bond. At the time of the shooting, Mixon was out on bond for allegedly shooting into a car near Vicksburg High School last year.

Mattie is stunned that any of the young men had a chance to post bond.

"Why can't they keep him in jail? Put him in a boot camp and learn him some sense. He got to learn some sense somewhere. If you put him on the streets again he's gonna kill. It may be you or it may be me," Mattie Gary said.

The motive for the murder is unclear.
