JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Families enjoyed the great outdoors and learned about our state's beauty and resources Saturday at the Mississippi Natural Science Museum.

Nature Fest is in its 13th year and it's the museum's biggest annual event.

There were fun hands on activities from archery to hiking and canoeing the Pearl River which runs behind the facility.

Kids also went on Geo treasure hunts, finding boxes hidden throughout the museum and along the trail.

Inside were live reptile shows, birds of prey exhibits, storytellers and conservation booths offering information on the state's resources.

It was also a once yearly opportunity to see the more the state's rare collection of specimens.

The museum houses more than one million Mississippi specimens collected since the 1930's.

Over 2,000 people attended last year's event.

Make plans to head to the Natural Science Museum May 4th for International Migratory Bird Day.
