JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

High school students from across Mississippi were in Jackson Sunday hoping for a chance to win a trip to Florida.

Students attended the Mississippi NAACP's ACT-SO competition at the M.W. Stringer Grand Lodge on Lynch Street.

The event was held to determine who would compete at the 104th National Convention in Orlando this July.

ACT-SO is a youth initiative of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, providing students with opportunities to explore academic options with tutorials and workshops.

The local competition showcases work have done all year long.

"We have a lot of young geniuses all over the city. So what the NAACP does through the ACT-SO is that it identifies energetic creative capable young people and tells them hey, shoot for the stars, but most importantly, use your creativity to make society better," said  C. Liegh McInnis, ACT-SO Judge.

Mississippi students have won several gold, silver, and bronze medals at the national level in the history of ACT-SO.
