STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi State's defense is missing a lot of the names that helped make it so successful over the past few seasons.

Geoff Collins' job is to make sure nobody can tell the difference.

The Bulldogs' new defensive coordinator was pleased with the results from Saturday's first scrimmage of the spring, which started with a dominating defense that held the team's more experienced offense to just one touchdown in its first seven drives.

Mississippi State's offense improved as the scrimmage progressed. Tyler Russell completed 28 of 40 passes for 307 yards and six touchdowns. The 6-foot-5 senior started all 13 games last season, throwing for 2,897 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Russell threw 3 of his touchdowns during Saturday's scrimmage to Jameon Lewis, who caught nine passes for 143 yards.
