Most PSA testing not necessary

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Most middle-aged men do not need to be screened for prostate cancer. That's according to new recommendations issued today by the American College of Physicians.

Experts say men between the ages of 50 and 69 should talk to their doctors about the potential benefits and harms of PSA testing before undergoing the procedure.

The group states that most prostate cancers are not life threatening and unnecessary testing and treatments can cause incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and other side effects.

The new statement recommends PSA testing only be performed on middle-aged men with a high risk of prostate cancer.

This study is published in the April 9 issue of 'Annals of Internal Medicine.'
