Hinds County Sheriff's Department authorities say a teenager is holding his mother hostage in a house in Raymond.
HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Hinds County Sheriff's Department authorities say a teenager is in custody after what was originally reported as a hostage situation Wednesday evening.
A Standoff between hinds county law enforcement and a teenager has ended.
Authorities say the 14-year-old threatened to shoot anyone who came near the house.
This all took place at 1887 McFarland Road in Raymond.
The Hinds County Sheriff's Department said the standoff ended peacefully. That teen is now in custody after what was originally reported as a hostage situation.
Shortly before 6:30 the nearly two and a half hour ordeal ended when SWAT and Hinds County law enforcement took the armed teen into custody.
No one was injured. Hinds County investigators said there was an initial report of a hostage situation, but that was not the case.
According to authorities, his grandmother inside but managed to get out of the home.
They said the 14 year old was alone when he began firing shots.
Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call involving a handgun around four o'clock.
Chief Deputy Chris Picou would not identify the weapon used to fire off numerous rounds.
At one point we are told he fired at Skycopter 3.
WLBT has learned that the home is that of George and Amanda Hale.
Residents at the scene would not go on camera but said the young teen had a troubled past and lived with his grandparents.
They say he was expelled from Carver Middle School for violent behavior.
During the standoff and random gunfire neighbors were evacuated
"When I got home I heard a couple of gunshots, but gunshots for us are kind of commonplace just because of target practice and hunters because we live in the woods...It makes me a little bit uncomfortable thinking that something like that can happen so far out here because we always felt really safe living where we did," said neighbor Cory Windham.
"He wasn't shooting at anybody that we know of. We had people who were watching him so he was just out there firing a gun into the ground is my understanding. We know that WLBT was up in the air and there was shooting at the time and that was our concern," Chief Deputy Chris Picou with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.
The unidentified 14 year old was not arrested. He has been taken in for a mental evaluation.
