Donate your athletic shoes for Ghana families

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

If you have a pair of old athletic shoes and aren't sure what to do with them consider adding them to the piles of donated shoes being collected at the Ridgeland Fleet Feet Sports or Watkins Elementary School in Jackson. The donations will help out families in Ghana.

"This is a big help to the kids in Ghana because a lot of the little elementary students don't have shoes to wear," said Watkins Elementary School Principal Dr. Lisa Andrus-Johnson.

The shoe donations are being shipped to the MORE Foundation Group. Once the shoes make it to Ghana families will gain more than just a pair of sneakers.

"The larger shoes, the adult size shoes are sold as affordable footwear and the funds generated from the sale of those shoes is used to train those in poverty on modular farming techniques to become self-sustainable," explained David Schommer, the Recycling Environment Awareness Coordinator for Watkins Elementary School.

While giving back is the theme of the shoe donation project, students are also learning about the world.

"We're trying to use this as a learning tool not just as giving, but in our reading classes because they have to read about Ghana, use technology to do research about Ghana and find out about West Africa. [Students are also learning] why we are giving them shoes and how they're actually benefiting from the shoes," said Dr. Andrus-Johnson

The goal is to collect at least 600 pairs of shoes by April 26.

Fleet Feet Sports is located at 500 Highway 51 in Ridgeland. Watkins Elementary School is located at 3915 Watkins Drive in Jackson.
