Cancer prevention study underway in Mississippi

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The American Cancer Society is calling all Mississippians who want to help prevent cancer.

The state has joined nationwide research called the Cancer Prevention Study 3, or CPS 3.

Enrollment is taking place right now at various locations, including at the State Capitol. Medical professionals are asking for volunteers between the ages of 30 and 65 who have not had a cancer diagnosis.

Officials say these studies have provided valuable data in the past.

This is the third major cancer prevention study of its kind done since the 1950's. "We discovered as Americans, there was a direct link between cigarette smoking and cancer. Things we take for granted. In the 80's when they did CPS 2, we discovered there's a direct link between obesity and cancer and lack of exercise. So who knows what we'll discover with CPS 3," said CPS 3 study coordinator, Jeanann Reeves.

There are several opportunities to sign up this week. Visit the Cancer Prevention Study 3 website for schedule of locations.
