Egg yolks linked to clogged arteries, researchers say

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

New research suggests a nutrient found in egg yolks may promote heart disease.

Lecithin is found in yolks and also beef, liver and pork.

Scientists at the Cleveland Clinic say the bacteria living in our gut turn lecithin into a compound that can increase the risk for clogged arteries.

The study also suggests that blood tests to detect the compound may someday predict which people are at high risk for heart problems, even if they don't have any other traditional risk factors.

The doctors measured levels of the compound in more than 4,000 heart disease patients.

Those with higher levels had two and a half times the risk of a heart attack or stroke over the three year study period.

This study is from the Cleveland Clinic and is published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
