MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Nissan announced it is providing a $500,000 grant to elementary students in Canton Public Schools. The funds will serve to strengthen an intervention program that focuses on the needs of struggling students.

Two vehicles were donated to the Canton Career Center, which offers instruction to prepare high school students for successful careers in the automotive industry and other fields.

"These dollars will be used to hire two interventionists. These interventionists will be full time, they will work year round and they will primarily work with students who are struggling learners," said Superintendent Dwight Luckett. "Many of these students will come to school, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and they're behind their reading level and math level."

The half-million-dollar grant will be awarded in five annual installments.
