JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police are trying to figure out who stole a large pecan tree from the front yard of a church in northwest Jackson.

There is no doubt a large tree was cut down in front of Shekinah Glory Baptist Church at 485 west Northside Drive. Pastor Karl Twyner says it happened Tuesday, and nobody was authorized to cut the tree down. He also claimed the tree was being cut up at the corner of Northside Drive and Interstate 55 at a barbeque business.

Assistant Police Chief Lee Vance confirmed there was an investigation into a stolen tree, but that is about as far as he wanted to go.

"We started an investigation into the missing tree," Vance said.

A WLBT crew saw police officers looking at wood near the barbeque business Friday afternoon. The business owner, Desmond Brown, said none of the wood was pecan.

"The wood came from a tree service," Brown said. "They took it out of a judge's yard this weekend. Why would a preacher who lost a tree out of his churchyard down here on Northside Drive tell me they are cutting up my tree as we speak at I-55 and Northside. The congregation need to find them another pastor."
