Home birth guidelines issued

While the American Academy of Pediatrics says the safest place for a child's birth is at a hospital or birthing center, they understand many women feel more comfortable delivering at home.

They have made new recommendations to ensure the baby is given the same quality of care at home as they would receive in the hospital.

The A-A-P says pregnant women should only used certified midwives during delivery -- and there should be at least one person dedicated to care for the baby.

Once born, the infant should undergo a detailed physical exam, receive a vitamin "K" and hepatitis "B" vaccine, get screened for jaundice and have their feeding ability assessed.

All medical equipment and an emergency telephone should be tested before delivery.
