Jackson State University recently announced plans for a $200 million, 50,000 seat domed campus stadium. JSU has been asking for a campus stadium for years. There are several reasons this actually makes sense:
• Every college in the state has its own campus stadium.
• University Medical Center needs the land where Veterans Memorial Stadium is located for the Mississippi healthcare corridor economic project.
• We need to stop pouring money into renovating Veterans Memorial stadium and the coliseum, they have outlived their usefulness.
• The City of Jackson needs a state of the art venue for concerts, special events and conventions to help revitalize downtown.
Now JSU's domed stadium doesn't need 50,000 seats, 25,000 to 35,000 seats is more feasible. Jackson State University certainly needs and deserves their own campus stadium. This can be accomplished if JSU, The City of Jackson, University Medical Center and the legislature will work together to make it happen. And that's My Turn.
