PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Wednesday morning's rain reflected the sorrow felt by family and friends in remembrance of fallen Pearl Police Officer Mike Walter. He was killed in the line of duty while trying to serve a warrant last year.

But the sense of support and brotherhood could not be ignored as a crowd attended the dedication of the Public Safety Officers' Memorial, on the one-year anniversary of Walter's death. The memorial is located across the street from Pearl City Hall.

"God is with us, and God goes with us every time we get out of the car, every time we serve that warrant," said Pearl Police Chief Ben Schuler, as he spoke during the ceremony.

Chief Schuler says he and Mayor Brad Rogers worked closely together to achieve the perfect memorial, not only to Officer Walter, but to every public safety officer who has risked their own life for the well-being of others.

Chief Schuler says the Pearl Police Department is recovering from the loss of their first officer ever in the line of duty.

"We've been through the sorrow, the anger, right now we're moving toward the happiness stage, the memories. You always want to remember those good memories. That's what gets you through the day," he says.

State and local dignitaries thanked law enforcement for answering God's calling for their lives. Then, Walter's widow Jeannie and 12-year-old daughter Bailey attached Walter's plaque to the memorial.

Mayor Rogers says God has been at work all along.

"The Lord has ways of directing your path. The Lord directed me and the chief in ways that I've never seen. Things happened, things fell into place for the funeral and the days after the tragic event. We couldn't have asked for better cooperation," he says.

Those taking part in the dedication also recognized the courage of Jackson Police Detective Eric Smith, who was also killed in the line of duty less than a month ago, on April 4.
