Tuesday, voters in many of the state's more than 200 cities and towns will be asked to choose between a field of candidates to represent their party. As election workers prepare to roll out those electronic machines, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says just because they're primary elections doesn't make them any less important.
"For some reason Mississippians just assume that somebody else will make the right decision for them when they elect their mayor, their aldermen and all these people that really are at the grass roots of running the state," said Hosemann.
Hosemann says whether it be through qualifying absentee ballots or in person voting, everyone should pay attention to the primary candidates and the elected positions they're seeking.
"Go vote," said Hosemann. "If you're entitled to an absentee ballot, if you're going to be out of town, over the age of 65 or disabled, go get an absentee ballot. We encourage you to do that."
Winners of the primary election will move on to the general election which is slated for June 4. While most cities will only be dealing with municipal races, a few cities will have special elections.
