Sharp increase in suicides

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The number of suicides among middle-aged adults in the U-S has risen sharply since 1999.

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds suicide deaths have now surpassed deaths from car crashes.

Between 1999 and 2010 annual suicide rates increased nearly 30%. Rates were highest among people in their 50's along with middle-aged whites and native Americans.

The report suggests the economic downturn and increased availability to prescription drugs may be factors in the suicide spikes.

This study is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
