Heroin vaccine being studied

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Preliminary research shows a new vaccine could help prevent relapse in people addicted to heroin.

The vaccine, which keeps the psychoactive ingredients of heroin from reaching the brain, showed promise in lab rats that had been exposed to the drug in the past.

Rats that did not get the vaccine quickly resumed their craving for heroin when given just one infusion. But vaccinated rats, even those who had been severely addicted, did not resume drug-seeking behavior when given access to heroin again.

Scientists say if the vaccine works well in human trials, it could become a standard therapy for heroin addiction.

This study was led by researchers at Scripps Research Institute and published in 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.'
