Numerous candidates lined the ballot Tuesday in the Democratic Primary for Mayor of the City of Jackson, and with so many potentials, it's no surprise that the primary election has come down to a runoff.
Preliminary results show that Mayor Harvey Johnson has 21% of the votes, but that was not enough to push him into the runoff election.
Chokwe Lumumba and Jonathan Lee lead the pack with 24.7% and 34.2%, respectively. The two candidates will battle in a runoff race May 21.
Regina Quinn followed closely with 15% of the votes with 97.7% of precincts reporting.
Mayor Harvey Johnson conceded the race and addressed his department heads while admitting his disappointment just before 10 p.m. Tuesday night. Johnson adds that he is proud of his accomplishments with infrastructure and downtown developments, but states "it wasn't enough." The loss is part of democracy, according to Johnson, and he hopes to be involved with the city in some way in the future.
No republican is in the race, but the democratic nominee will face three independents in the general election June 4.
