Is it just me, or do every time I turn around someone is being hailed as a "hero?" Last week Jason Collins, an NBA basketball player, publicly announced he was gay.
He was constantly being called a hero and compared to Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. It is hard for me to think of a professional athlete who gets paid millions of dollars, merely announcing he was gay qualifying him as a hero.
I personally like the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission's definition of a hero, "Someone who voluntarily leaves a point of safety to assume life risk to save or attempt to save the life of another."
When we throw around the term hero it cheapens the meaning for the real heroes like our military, police and firefighters, as well as those who risk their lives for others.
