Roofers remove shingles from wrong house

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Many Jackson homeowners are spending thousands of dollars replacing their roof from recent hail damage. One Jackson homeowner didn't need her roof repaired, but now she is forced to fork out thousands of dollars after a roofing crew apparently came to the wrong house and began removing shingles. This happened just hours before severe weather set in Thursday night.

"I jumped up and turned the lights on. I started looking around and at that time it was just a little drop. Drip, drip, drip," said Cyndi Tackett. "Then I realized, oh my gosh the roof is leaking."

In a matter of five hours Cyndi Tackett was left with a disaster from her bedroom all the way through her home to the garage.

"It didn't take long for it to get from here to here and it caved in," said Tackett.

After the recent hail storm Jackson experienced, Tackett did not have much damage, but did have her roof inspected just to be sure.

"She thought maybe the insurance inspector had knocked a hole in her roof when he was walking around up there," said roofer James Blakely. "However, that wasn't the case."

Blakely has been in the business for more than 30 years. He said he immediately knew what happened when he saw the roof.

"I could tell when I first pulled up that the roof had been torn off intentionally and stacked on the front," said Blakely. "Because that's what we do is start at the back and come to the front. And it was just left that way over night."

"But, I can say that they were at the wrong house," added Blakely. "And what I think is somebody got their wires crossed and showed up at the wrong address, but somebody corrected them to get to the right address and didn't correct this problem here and left this homeowner in this shape."

This mistake has left Tackett with a huge bill.

"She needs a roof and destruction with the water coming in the house last night, it's going to be in the tens of thousands of dollars easily," said Blakely.

"If anyone happened to see anyone, vehicles, anyone what so ever, please help find out who in the world would have done such a thing," added Tackett.

Tackett lives on Teresa Drive in Jackson. She has filed a police report.

If you have any information about the incident, you can call the Jackson Police Department.
