Adding formula to breast milk has benefit

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Giving newborns a small amount of formula in the hospital may actually help some mothers breastfeed longer.

Formula is normally frowned upon for breastfed babies because some say it could cause an infant to reject mother's milk.

But a new study finds when newborns had significant weight loss, small amounts of formula eased their hunger and helped mothers relax, be more confident and therefore produce a good milk supply.

Three months after birth, 79% of babies who were given early limited formula were still breastfeeding, compared to less than half of the babies who had no formula.
