JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The food at mom and pop-style restaurants may be just as calorie-laden as what's served in larger chains.

Researchers at Tufts University analyzed some of the most popular meals at 33 local restaurants in Boston. Nearly three-quarters of the 157 meals contained more than half the recommended daily caloric intake of 2,000 calories.

Italian, American and Chinese food typically had the highest calorie content. Vietnamese and Japanese restaurants tended to offer the slimmest meals.

This study is from researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, and is published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
