JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

History came alive Saturday in Hinds County for the commemorative Battle of Champion Hill, near Raymond.

The 150th anniversary re-enactment was a celebration and remembrance for those who fought at what is called "The Hill of Death".

More than 6,200 union and confederate soldiers died during the battle.

Union troops, lead by General Ulysses S. Grant, pushed back the southern force on May 16th, 1863 which eventually led to the Siege of Vicksburg.

"I think it quiet important to share it with the rest of the country and for people to know what happened here. We had over 140 people showed up that had ancestors that fought here at the battle of champion hill," said Sid Champion, whose family owned Champion Hill Plantation.

The Battle of Champion Hill is one of five during the Vicksburg Campaign, which lead to the confederate fall of the city.
