Family invests in in-ground storm shelter

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A turn of a bolt and a slide of a door are two simple things Lauren Choate says will keep her and her family safe in a storm.

"It's very important for us to have this. Once it was installed, it was like a boulder off our shoulders," said Eads resident Lauren Choate.

A little more than one year ago, the Chaote family put the in-ground shelter in their garage.

It can hold as many as eight people.

"This door slides back and then we just come down here, come in and we have a seat," Choate explained.

The inside is simple with seats on both sides.  But do not let the simplicity fool you.

Experts say this shelter can withstand a major storm.

"This was tested to withstand near three times what an EF5 could create when it comes to uplift. It's not subject to debris because it's below ground," said John Everson with Take Cover Storm Shelters.

It costs anywhere from$3,000 to $5,000 to put an in-ground storm shelter in. There are other options like safe rooms that are installed inside your house.

Experts say this in ground shelter is the safest in high winds.
